Focus 3. Social choice and decision making about the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity

Making decisions about the use of water, harvesting of natural resources, the conversion of natural systems into production systems or about pollution emissions all have consequences for biodiversity. Such decisions may have a negative impact on biodiversity when there is a poor appreciation of cause and effect mechanisms or there are inadequate incentives to minimise the impact. The objective in this focus is to develop methods to fully account for both immediate and long-term impacts of human choices on biodiversity.

bioSUSTAINABILITY aims to do this by:

  • incorporating this information into the decision-making process
  • improving understanding of cause and effect mechanisms
  • developing adequate incentives to minimise impacts.
