Focus 1. Evaluating the effectiveness of current measures for the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity
The global loss of biodiversity continues despite local, national and international policy, regulation, social customs and norms that aim to use biodiversity in a sustainable way. This is in part due to the failure of policy to address the underlying motivations and incentives of individuals, businesses and governments whose actions threaten biodiversity. It is also due to the failure of society to appreciate the full value of biodiversity, particularly the ecosystem services that biodiversity provides and how human behaviour impacts on biodiversity.
The bioSUSTAINABILITY programme aims, through Focus 1, to identify factors that lead to the success or failure of existing conservation efforts, to create a solid foundation for developing measures of biodiversity and for assessing the effectiveness of programmes and policies.

The Convention on Biological Diversity and the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora are two examples of policies that are designed to promote the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity. Focus 1 seeks to assess the effectiveness of such policies in order to identify best practise.
